New footage from the forthcoming Star Wars film suggests Daisy Ridley's character Rey is about to take a turn to the dark side.
She's known for playing the heroine in a galaxy, far, far away.
But new footage from the forthcoming Star Wars film suggests Daisy Ridley's character Rey is about to take a turn to the dark side.
Director JJ Abrams appeared at Disney's biennial fan convention, D23, in California to present clips from The Rise Of Skywalker, which is due out this Christmas.
He was joined at the event by the cast of the film, which is billed as bringing the curtain down on the nine-part saga that began with 1977's Star Wars.
Abrams said they were not ready to share a new trailer and instead presented fans with a sizzle reel of the film.
In the footage, Rey is seen fighting villain Kylo Ren - played by Adam Driver - in the middle of the ocean but it is the final scene that has got fans talking.
It shows Rey, dressed ominously in a dark hood, no longer using the blue lightsaber she inherited from Luke Skywalker, and instead wielding a red double lightsaber - similar to one that past villain Darth Maul owned.
It would a dramatic twist in the series if the protagonist turned evil but could be a red herring from director Abrams.
The Rise Of Skywalker will be Ridley's third outing as resistance fighter Rey, following on from 2015's The Force Awakens and 2017's The Last Jedi.
Speaking at D23, the London-born actress said she "cried a lot" while filming her final scenes and described her delight at the audience's reaction to the new footage.
She said: "I felt nervous with it coming, because I knew what it was going to be and hearing the audience reaction was amazing."
At the event, Abrams also revealed Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia before her death in 2016, will appear for the final time in the new Star Wars film, using footage shot from The Force Awakens.
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is due to be released in the UK on 19 December and in the US on 20 December.
