Due to epic work commitments the pair, plus original co-host Cat Deeley, just haven’t had time to work on it, and have cancelled plans for a comeback this year
Instead, fans will need to wait until 2019 for their next Wonkey Donkey fix.
A TV source said: “Ant and Dec are perfectionists and they don’t want to do anything by halves.
“Given the massive interest in the show’s comeback, they have decided to give themselves another year to make sure it’s absolutely perfect.
“It’s now looking like it will be a 21st anniversary celebration, rather than the 20th. They’re aiming for 2019 instead.”
SMTV Live ran from 1998 to 2003, with the Geordie double act Dec hosting the first three years before quitting to front Pop Idol.
The programme included a number of memorable sketches, including Chums, their sitcom featuring cameos from big-hitting showbiz names including VICTORIA BECKHAM and BILLIE PIPER.
In February last year, the SMTV comeback was confirmed with a big announcement at the TV Baftas, an industry showcase.
Ant said: “ITV have just agreed. It’s going to go ahead and it’ll be in August 2018, 20 years after it aired.”
Dec added: “They are onboard now, and we have had our first discussions about it, and it looks like it is going to go ahead.”
However, given that the duo have TV juggernauts Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent, I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here and their new ancestry show DNA on their plate, it’s no wonder they’ve been too hard-pressed to do justice to new material for the SMTV project.
I’m sure when it does finally happen, it will be well worth the wait.
