His mum Christine says "getting better".

She has said the TV star is recovering following his devastating health scare.Christine has opened up about Richard's illness, revealing terrified family members feared they "were going to lose him" after he was placed in a medically induced coma.

However, she says he has since "opened his eyes" and they can see "he is getting better."

She told the Mansfield Chad: "It was such a relief when he opened his eyes, although he's not responding to us very well yet we can see that he is getting better."

He spent a week on a respirator after doctors at Lewisham Hospital put him in a medically induced coma, but they have since performed a tracheostomy so he can breath unaided.

Christine explained: "They kept him like that [in a coma] for a week and we hadn’t left his side, at one point we really felt we might lose him.

"His temperature went down and then on Wednesday they did a tracheostomy to improve his breathing and bring him off sedation...

"The doctors have said that he is very distressed and confused after being in a coma for a week, which you can understand, and that we need to keep talking to him and reminding him of where he is."

She added in a post on Twitter: "As many people know, my son @richardpbacon has been in a medically induced coma in intensive care for a week...

"But he’s young, he’s fit and the NHS have been brilliant, and I’m sure he’ll come through this.

"Been very worrying. We’ve received so many lovely messages..."

It comes after it was revealed Bacon was fighting for his life in a medically induced coma after contracting a mystery respiratory virus.

Richard was taken to hospital when he landed back in the UK from a trip to America.

The former Blue Peter host has been in a critical condition for a week, after initially being diagnosed with pneumonia across both lungs.

But doctors were forced to take emergency action after he failed to respond to treatment.

A source close to Richard explained: “This is an extremely worrying time for everyone who loves him.

“Doctors started treating him for pneumonia but it soon became apparent that it wasn’t working and his condition took a dramatic turn for the worse.

“They had no choice but to put him into a medically induced coma to save his life because things spiralled so fast, but that was a week ago and they are no closer to finding out what is wrong with him or how to help him.

“It’s touch and go, and extremely upsetting for everyone who loves him. They are beside themselves with worry.”

The dad-of-two tweeted from Lewisham Hospital, South East London, last Thursday, writing: “Thank God I got ill in Britain (actually on the way to Britain, was taken off the plane in a wheelchair).

“F*** all the ideology driven politicians who’ve messed up America’s healthcare system.

“Viva the NHS. Happy 70th.”
