Peter Kay announced his first stand-up tour in eight years

The comedian's fans will no doubt be rejoicing in their droves after the Car Share actor revealed plans to return to his "most successful hobby - stand-up".

The British funnyman will hit the road next April, before wrapping up in March 2019, and will stop off at the UK's biggest arenas, including London's The O2 and Manchester Arena.

Injecting his much-loved humour into his new promo poster, Kay describes himself as "one of Bolton's funniest comedians", while holding up a piece of cardboard that reads: "Have gags, will travel."

The cheeky flyer also insists that Kay's forthcoming arena tour will make an "ideal Christmas gift", with tickets going on sale this Sunday.

Speaking about his return to stand-up in a statement, the Phoenix Nights star enthused: "I really miss it.

"I know how lucky I am to be making television series and have really loved these past few years working on Car Share but I miss doing stand-up.

"As terrifying as it is, when it works there’s nothing more fun and exciting."

He added: "Plus, a lot has happened in the last eight years, with Trump, Twitter and my Nan getting her front bush trimmed at the age of 96. I can’t wait to get back up on stage."

Tickets will no doubt be a fast sell-out, with the comedian's 2010 tour still officially ranking in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling comedy tour of all time.

The Bolton native played to a whooping 1.2 million people - will he be able to break his own record?
