Game Of Thrones trailer: 'The Great War is here!'

A new Game Of Thrones trailer gives fans a glimpse of the most significant event in the history of the seven kingdoms.

"The Great War is here!"

These five words were enough to leave fans "crying with excitement" after getting a glimpse of the penultimate season of the hit HBO show.

The new trailer shows Queen Cersei, played by Lena Headey, sitting in the Iron Throne with her brother, the Kingslayer, at her side.

"Enemies to the east, enemies to the west, enemies in the south, enemies in the north," she is heard saying.

"Whatever stands in our way, we will defeat it. We're the last Lannisters. The last ones who count."

The Great War is the climax of what the show has been building up for the last six seasons, where virtually every single character is set against everyone else.

Fans have shared their enthusiasm on social media.

"CRYING WITH EXCITEMENT RIGHT NOW!!! GET HERE FASTER JULY!!," one user wrote.

"I'M CRYING SO HARD RIGHT NOW!!!! I CAN'T WAIT," said another.

After six years of parallel stories, George R R Martin and the show's producers have managed to entangle the heads of the remaining kingdoms all in one place.

At the centre, the Lannisters and the coveted Iron Throne.

Advancing full throttle against Queen Cersei is dragon lady herself, Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, and her army led by the Unsullied Grey Worm.

Daenerys is also seen sitting in a throne of her own, at Dragonstone, former home of Robert and Stannis Baratheon.

"I was born to rule the Seven Kingdoms, and I will," she is heard saying, followed by a glimpse of her army attacking Casterly Rock.

And this is merely the East.

From the West, the trailer shows Euron Greyjoy's ship, led by Yara Greyjoy, played by Gemma Whelan, accompanied by her castrated brother, played by Alfie Allen.

From the North, the newly crowned King of North, Jon Snow of Winterfell.

"The king in the North!," a crowd cheers around him.

Lord Snow here seen beating up Littlefinger, who is trying to manipulate his little sister Sansa.

"Your fathers and brothers are gone, yet here you stand, last, best hope against the coming storm," Littlefinger is heard saying.

And then, of course, there are the White Walkers, the unseen but known threat that lures over everyone aiming for the Throne.

With just seven episodes in the seventh series and another eight scheduled for the finale, winter seems to have finally arrived.

Game Of Thrones returns on 17 July to Sky Atlantic.
