Game of Thrones confirmed to return in 2019

The final season of the fantasy epic will run for six episodes next year – where the fight for the Iron Throne will finally come to an end.

Fans of the HBO and Sky Atlantic series will now have an agonising wait to discover the consequences of the action-packed season seven finale.

Miguel Sapochnik, who has been praised for directing the show’s most loved episodes (including season six’s Battle of the Bastards) will return for another stint in the director’s chair, alongside show creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss.

Avid devotees of the adventures in Westeros have been quick to snap up any info they can on what has been promised by the cast to be a “monumental” final season.

Bosses of the show have been so dedicated in keeping the outcome a secret, they have filmed multiple endings and keep scripts under such tight security even the cast can’t take them home or read them ahead of time.

John Bradley, who plays loveable Samwell Tarly on the show, told the Huffington Post: “Clearly every single episode of the six you’ve got left in Season 8 is gonna be monumental and needs somebody at the helm who’s done that kind of high-stakes, high-octane direction before for us.”

John also added that each episode would be like a series finale.

He said: "I think what we used to call Episode nine in Game of Thrones folklore — the episode when everything comes to a head and you get a lot of spectacular sequences — I think you’re gonna get six ‘Episode 9s’ this year."

Viewers have also come up with their own theories on how the show might end – including predictions that Daenerys will get pregnant after her illicit night with Jon Snow (who happens to be her nephew).

Bran Stark revealed in the final episode of season seven that Jon is indeed the son of Lyanna Stark and Daenerys' brother Rhaegar – but unbeknown to them the pair were currently getting intimate in the Queen of Dragons quarters.
