Ed to play Lisa's love interest on The Simpsons

Singer Ed Sheeran has revealed his next role on the small screen - as a character in The Simpsons.

Fresh from his cameo appearance in the new series of Game of Thrones, the global superstar will voice character Brendan in a musical-themed special of the animated show.

The character, who will feature in The Simpsons' 29th series beginning in October, will be at the centre of a love triangle with Lisa Simpson and Nelson Muntz.

Posting an image of his character on Instagram, Sheeran wrote: "This year continues to be equally surreal and amazing.

"Watch out for this one, me and Lisa have a whole thing going on x."

Executive producer Al Jean said the part, which includes singing, was "perfect" for Sheeran.

He told Entertainment Weekly: "We said, 'Oh, great, we'll have him do this!' And we recorded him over the phone from England."

During his brief appearance on Game of Thrones, Sheeran was dressed as a soldier and sang around a campfire when he caught the attention of Maisie Williams' Arya Stark.

Stark said to the 26-year-old's unnamed character: "It's a pretty song, I've never heard it before."

Sheeran replied: "It's a new one."

The cameo is not Sheeran's first appearance on a hit US TV show.

In 2015, he played himself in NBC comedy Undateable, while he also had a recurring role on FX drama The B*****d Executioner.
