British Soap Awards Nominations

Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon is to compete for a top acting honour at the British Soap Awards for her role as Bethany Platt in the show’s harrowing grooming storyline.

The soap looks set to bag a number of best prizes as its rival EastEnders missed out on a number of nominations – including a snub for Danny Dyer in the Best Actor category.

Lucy, 21, has been at the heart of Corrie’s shocking sex ring storyline as Bethany’s boyfriend Nathan grooms her and shares the teenager with his sick friends.  Her efforts have now won her a shot at the coveted Best Actress gong, competing with fellow Coronation street Kym Marsh, who plays grieving mum Michelle Connor).

Others in the category include Lacey Turner, for her role as Stacey Fowler in EastEnders, and Charlotte Bellamy, who plays Laurel Thomas in Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks’ Anna Passey for her portrayal of Sienna Blake.

Coronation Street looks set to be a big winner at the awards show next month as it is also nominated for Best British Soap, and Best Storyline for the grooming of Bethany.  Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt, will compete for Best actor along with Emmerdale's Danny Miller (Aaron Dingle) and John Middleton (Ashley Thomas), and Jamie Lomas and Gregory Finnegan for Hollyoaks.  Corrie's Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, is also nominated for Best Male Dramatic Performance.

He will be going up against EastEnders' Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell), Ian Midlane (Doctors, Dr Al Haskey), John Middleton (Emmerdale, Ashley Thomas) and Kieron Richardson (Hollyoaks, Ste Hay) .

Danny Dyer, who plays Mick Carter in EastEnders, is noticeably absent from both the male acting categories.

Corrie scored a massive 19 nominations ahead of the ceremony in London on June 3 - equalling Emmerdale, but leaving EastEnders trailing behind on 12.

The night's top award, Best British Soap, will pitch the rivals against each other in a battle with Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Doctors.

Corrie's grooming can be credited with the show's huge nominations list, while Emmerdale racked up nods for the heart-breaking death of Ashley Thomas.

Viewers were left in tears as the beloved character passed away this year following a battle with dementia.

EastEnders won credit for the show's big New Year plot which featured the death of Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell in a freak swimming pool accident.

The story is up for Scene of The Year.
