He died on Friday night in Los Angeles.

The US actor, who is survived by his family including wife Marcelle, made a name for himself through the iconic Caped Crusader.

But he saw a resurgence in his career when he accepted a gig as the voice of the mayor of Quahog in Seth MacFarlane’s animated hit Family Guy.

In a statement, West’s family said: “Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives.

“He was and always will be our hero.”

They noted he was a “true American icon” who would be missed by millions.
