Council encourages Kirklees parents to sign up for summer holiday free school meals

It's the first time the support has been available through the holidays.

Parents in Kirklees are being encouraged to sign up for their free school meal vouchers if their child is eligible.

Eligible families will be able to claim their free school meals throughout the summer for the first time because of hardship brought on by the coronavirus crisis.

The majority of schools break up on Friday July 17th and children who qualify for free school meals are entitled to a voucher worth £15 per week for the holidays, making a total of £105.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, free school meal applications in Kirklees have been three times higher than the same time last year. The council claim they've helped over 1,000 extra families to receive support.

The council say they committed to providing the meals over the holiday period at the start of the pandemic, even if the government chose not to - though that funding has now been agreed by Westminster.

Children are eligible if they're in full time education and their parents receive certain benefits. Full details are available on the council's website.
