Anti-Suicide Fence Could Cut Deaths At Scammonden Bridge

A bridge expert has said he believes a new fence could reduce the suicide risk at Scammonden Bridge

The Bridge is located above the M62 motorway and is the longest concrete arch bridge in the UK.

Canadian engineer Bob Moore has offered to help anyone that becomes involved with a project to cut deaths from the 120ft tall structure.

Mr Moore who trained in engineering at Bradford University, helped with designing an anti-suicide fence in the Vancouver area.

In September last year Highways England said it did not believe Scammonden Bridge could handle the weight of higher barriers.

However, last week confirmed it had launched a new suicide prevention strategy.

It is now thought to be taking a second look at some kind of structural improvements with hopes to reduce the number of potential suicides.

A Kirklees Council Spokesperson said: "Every suicide is a tragedy and the council is looking at ways of reducing suicides across Kirklees. At this stage there are no specific plans for this location but it will be considered as part of the local action plan, along with partners across the region."
