15 Fire Engines Tackle Hebden Bridge Blaze

A fire at the former Walkley Clogs factory has closed Burnley Road.

A major Pennine route remains closed this morning following a major fire at a disused factory – and the blaze-ravaged mill looks set to be demolished.

Authorities closed the main A646 Burnley Road at Mytholmroyd last night (Thursday, August 1) while 15 fire engines fought the blaze at its height.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 5.45pm but their presence was being scaled back by around 7.45pm, with diversions in place for traffic.

Last night a spokesperson for Calderdale Council said: “West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and our highways teams are at Walkley Clogs with building control and structural engineers to carry out a demolition, following a large fire earlier today, meaning Burnley Road will remain closed tonight and all day tomorrow. Partial closure on Saturday is possible depending on how the demolition goes.”

This morning commuters had to use alternative routes leading to some congestion on Height Road, Midgley, a narrow route, or head towards Calderdale’s major town, Halifax, via Todmorden, Littleborough, Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge.

Where possible motorists were advised to avoid the area, with the council spokesperson saying: “Please note Burnley Road is closed this morning and will remain closed all day.

“If you travel this way you’ll need to find an alternative, there’s no way through due to last nights fire.”

The former clog factory closed at the premises shortly after the millennium and relocated to other premises in the heart of the village. The mill has been derelict since.

This summer updated proposals to demolish the mill and build 13 townhouses around a courtyard were sent to the council following submission initial plans just over a year ago.
